Passing the Fruitcake Test - Can You Handle the Stress of Bariatric Surgery?

When people think of serious medical issues, they think of things like cancer and diabetes. People rarely think of obesity, but obesity is a major issue in the United States. It can lead to more serious conditions like respiratory illnesses, diabetes, and heart disease.

Many people who cannot lose weight by dieting and exercise are choosing to have bariatric surgery to help them lose weight. Still, not everyone can have a weight loss procedure.

You have to meet certain weight requirements and just as importantly, you have to be able to pass the fruitcake test. Not to state you are a fruitcake, insane, nutty, loco, crazy, bananas and all those other wacky words used to describe emotional unstable people, but your doctor must know that you are emotionally prepared to deal with the stress of the surgery and the recovery process. Most surgeons, at least the ones who didn't buy their medical degrees online, will require that you pass a psychological evaluation.

During the evaluation, a psychologist will talk to you to confirm you are mentally prepared to deal with bariatric surgery by assessing your strengths and weaknesses in the following areas –

  • Although being declared mentally insane will not stop you from having a weight loss procedure (I still got mine done), you will need to be undergoing treatment for your mental illness. The psychologist will also want to know about your family history of psychological issues as well as the state of your current relationships. Drug, tobacco, and alcohol addictions are also considered to be illnesses.
  • Your personal history will also be reviewed. Have you had 36 jobs in fifty years? If you can't stick with a job, how can you stick with a lifetime fitness and diet routine? What is your marital status? Do you have a phobia of commitment?
  • Your food and weight past. Have you always been obese? Have you tried dieting and exercise to lose weight? Are you a compulsive overeater? These are things the psychologist and your bariatric physician will need to know.
  • Are you really prepared for the surgery? Have you researched the good, bad, and ugly about weight loss surgery? Are you prepared to attend support group meetings? Do you really understand what will happen to your body during and after the procedure?

Questions like these and many more will be asked before the surgeon is willing to perform your weight loss surgery. Be honest with your answers. It's better to be honest than to be surprised later on.
