What Do They Mean by Lap-Band?

People are always talking about Lap-Band and Lap-Band surgeries, and I'm wondering – what are they talking about. To me, a Lap-Band sounds like some kind of fashion accessory that you wear around your waist.

That's not what it is though. A Lap-Band is a weight loss aid that actually resembles a belt. It is inserted around the upper stomach area through laparoscopy. The band has small partitioned sections which hold saline solutions.

Hey, this is sounding weirder by the minute, isn't it? I thought so too, but then I read on. Saline is salt, right? How is salt around my stomach going to help me? Well keep reading.

When the saline solution is added to the belt, it expands, and this makes the portion of your stomach that accepts the food you eat, even smaller. As such, the presence of the Lap-Band reduces the amount of food that can actually make it into your stomach.

Do you see where this is heading now? If your stomach is smaller, it's going to hold less so you'll eat less. This means that you're going to be able to lose some weight. This Lap-Band thing is starting to sound pretty good.

With most obese people, it's not what they eat that causes them to become overweight; it's how much they eat. A big part of eating nutritionally has to do with portion control. It seems like most people want a Double Whopper when a Junior Whopper will do.

A Lap-Band device helps you cut back on what you eat. Of course, you still need to eat some healthy things like fruits and veggies to lose weight (yeah – yucky I now, but like we tell the kids, it's good for us) and stay healthy, but by eating properly and following the guidelines that accompany the weight loss device, weight loss and a long-term lifestyle change is a possible.

If you're a long term fataholic, like myself, then you know about dealing with a big leg, thick thighs, and a big every thing else. You also know how it feels to squeeze into a tiny coach seat on an airplane and realize that you must literally choke yourself in order to be considered safe enough to fly.

That's not pretty; in fact, it's downright embarrassing and depressing. Despite what you people in the fashion industry think, you don't make attractive clothes for big people – you really don't. Well, why don't we fat people just lose some weight, then huh?

Don't you think we try? The diets we try and fail. Hell, we even make up our own diets in an attempt to starve ourselves. That doesn't work either. Jennifer Anniston can run miles outside everyday or on her treadmill, but a three hundred pound woman with arthritic knees – it's not going to happen.

Many of us have been fat all our lives. Some of us have even begun to give up hope. I'm not sure about you, but now that I know what this Lap-Band thing is; I think I'm going to do a little more research.

What the Lap-Band is? It could be the last hope for some of us.
