Surviving the Holidays Lap-Band Style

There the calendar is packed with food laden holidays. You pig out on New Year's Eve; you pig out on Christmas, on Thanksgiving, on your birthday, on your relative's birthdays, on Easter Sunday, there's that special meal on Valentine's Day, the 4th of July – the reasons to eat are endless.

Plus, there's always so much food. In my house on Christmas, everybody gets together and everybody brings food. Last year, there was ham, turkey, fried chicken, collard greens, corn bread, macaroni and cheese, barbecue ribs, green beans, potato salad, mashed potatoes, dressing, pumpkin pie, apple pie, chocolate cake, vanilla cupcakes, and chocolate. Oh my goodness, I'm hungry for all of it.

But now, I have a Lap-Band, and things have to be different. I have to stick with my healthy eating regimen. While I'm hanging with the folks, I will keep these thoughts in mind.

  • My contribution to the holiday parties will be healthy but delicious meals. By simply changing a few menu items, I can make a stuffing that has less fat and more vitamins and minerals and tastes even better.
  • Before the party begins, I will eat a healthy meal. This way when all the heavy temptation trays arrive, I'll feel satisfied already and won't feel the urge to nibble or run off and hide with a turkey leg.
  • If I do eat something (it is the holidays after all), then I'll use the smallest plate I can find, not one of the larger plates that will be crying out to me to fill up to the rim, twice over. Then I will eat slowly and savor each bite and will not need a refill.
  • As I eat my meal, I will remember to sip on a glass of water, avoiding all alcohol. This will also make me feel more satisfied and make it easier for me to turn down a slice of chocolate cake.
  • I will not give in to feeders, those who simply want me to eat because they are eaten and those who want me to eat simply because they don't want my lifestyle change to be successful. The latter are the haters!

Well it sucks to be them because I'm doing the rest of my holidays Lap-Band Style. I'm going to enjoy my food without overeating, and I'm going to be healthy enough to get outside and play games with my family.
